PARK CITY, UTAH – (February 2, 2011) – Among the many artful amenities at Montage Deer Valley, the newest mountain resort that opened in December in Park City, Utah, are hundreds of original artworks by Utah and other Western artists. These paintings, sculptures and more fill the resort’s public spaces, guestrooms and residences, in keeping with the Montage Hotels & Resorts commitment to museum-quality art, particularly original, local art that evokes a unique sense of place.

The independent hotel company’s first and flagship resort, the Craftsman-style Montage Laguna Beach, features a remarkable collection of plein air paintings and commissioned works that celebrate the creative heritage of this oceanfront artists’ colony in Southern California. Montage Beverly Hills, the company’s second property, an urban Spanish Revival-style oasis in the golden triangle of Beverly Hills, is home to a carefully assembled art collection that pays homage to the golden era of Hollywood and the area’s grand estates.

Montage Deer Valley, the company’s first mountain lodge-style resort with true ski-in, ski-out access to Deer Valley, occupies an enviable location mid-mountain surrounded by thousands of acres of forest and skiable terrain. One of its commissioned works is High Country Legacy, the Herb Mignery sculpture of a Wasatch skier circa 1900 that greets guests in the lobby.

“With an accomplished career spent sculpting the many faces of the American West, we thought that Herb Mignery’s ability to portray the everyday experiences that hard working individuals faced in creating a life in rugged mountains such as the Wasatch Front would be a great centerpiece for  our lodge-style resort,” said Marcus Jackson, General Manager of Montage Deer Valley.

A member of the Cowboy Artists of America and the National Sculpture Society, the artist has placed more than 45 works of monumental sculpture, including centenary monuments for the Cheyenne Frontier Rodeo and the Denver National Western Stock Show.  To create High Country Legacy, Mignery referenced early equipment and garb through various ski museums to assure the accuracy of the piece, which demonstrates the trademark eight-foot-long skis or “snow shoes” that the early settlers used for both transportation and recreation.

“From Western art icons such as Carl Rungius and Fredric Remington to the top wildlife artists of today including Tucker Smith and Utah’s own Luke Frazier, the Montage Deer Valley art collection exhibits museum-like grace in an exquisite setting,” said Ryan Garrett, Principal, Ryan Garrett Fine Art Consulting.

Works on display showcase native wildlife and alpine terrain in every season captured by highly prized Utah and Western artists, ranging from prodigies such as Nicholas Coleman to many of the most established painters from America’s past and present. These include living legends such as Tucker Smith, Luke Frasier and Clyde Aspevig to noted historic artists, such as Frederic Remington and Carl Rungius, to name just a few.  The works of John James Audubon are included in the collection through special arrangement with Chicago’s Oppenheimer Gallery.

A guided resort art walk offers a tour of more than 100 works, including a variety of paintings, textiles and sculptures with nature and outdoor recreation themes.  The resort’s concierge maintains a complete digest of the collection along with information on local galleries where collectors may add pieces to their personal assemblage.

For guests seeking additional artful experiences, Old Town Park City’s vibrant Main Street is brimming with art galleries, exhibitions and events. The Park City Gallery Association organizes a popular community Art Stroll on the last Friday of every month that highlights artists, special exhibits and art events. The non-profit Kimball Art Center, an Art Stroll sponsor, also hosts the Annual Park City Kimball Arts Festival every August with its opening night Kimball Art Auction & Gala, presents unique exhibitions and offers year-round visual arts education for children and adults.

Compass Sports, the resort’s outdoor outfitter, can arrange customized outdoor painting and nature photography sessions. Paintbox, the resort’s exclusive club for younger guests ages 5-12, offers daily schedules of adventures that include alpine-inspired arts and crafts.

A rich performing arts tradition complements that devoted to the visual arts, with numerous events and venues, including the acclaimed annual Sundance Film Festival, for which Montage Deer Valley&
