Department of Tourism launches Travel Wisconsin mobile app
in Android platform to help travelers find fun in Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. (April 11, 2011) — Furthering its mission to make sure travelers find fun in Wisconsin, the Department of Tourism has unveiled a Travel Wisconsin™ mobile app for Android™ mobile devices, following on the heels of the successful iPhone® app launched last year.
The free app makes finding local attractions, lodging, dining and recreation throughout the state as easy as a walk in the park. The app can be downloaded from the Android Market and will work on any mobile device operating with Android OS 1.6 or greater.
Mobile travel planning is increasing among consumers. According to eMarketer, nearly a third of smartphone users will research travel plans on a mobile device this year. Travel Wisconsin’s iPhone app has been downloaded more than 5,300 times since October and users have launched the app nearly 22,000 times. Analytics show usage rates are higher on the weekends, indicating that travelers are using the app while they are on weekend getaways.
“We clearly needed to enter the Android market,” Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett said. “Not only did we receive immediate positive response to the iPhone version, but the number of Android users continues to increase and those users have asked us for an app of their own to connect with Wisconsin travel opportunities.”
The Android app serves up nearby attractions, events, restaurants and accommodations in relation to the GPS coordinates of the user. Attractions and events are organized by categories to further tailor the results. Events are sorted by proximity with the closest events listed first and are also organized by date. Lodging results are sorted by accommodation type (hotels, bed and breakfasts, resorts, campgrounds) and show what amenities are available so users can easily find where they want to stay. Dining options are sorted by cuisine. Directions and maps to each location are also available.
Social media sharing has also been integrated into the app allowing users to link to their Facebook and Twitter profiles from within the app. In addition, the app allows users to save and bookmark their favorite listings to easily return to them later.
Travelers looking for year-round Wisconsin getaway ideas, travel planning, events and free guides can discover their own fun at TravelWisconsin.com. And don’t forget to bring all the fun Wisconsin has to offer right to your fingertips by downloading the free Travel Wisconsin™ iPhone or Android app.
