KAPALUA, MAUI, HAWAII – The Kapalua Villas has launched a new monthly lecture series, Ke Kani O Ke Kai (translated in Hawaiian to “Voices of the Sea”), allowing guests and Maui residents to experience the unique voices of Hawaii’s marine life. Led by local marine biologist Amy Reiri the educational event was conceived to celebrate the concert of voices and sounds of the ocean and is held on the first Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m. at the Kapalua Resort’s Village Café and Sweet Shoppe.

“With Amy’s educational lectures, guests will be privy to the wonders of Hawaii’s marine ecosystem, from someone who has experienced and studied the subject in-depth, firsthand. The creatures who we share our oceans with are an integral part of what makes Hawaii so special and it’s an honor to be able to give them a voice with the Ke Kani O Ke Kai program,” said TJ Oesterling, general manager of The Kapalua Villas. 

“Outrigger Hotels & Resorts is excited to be able to continue its commitment to the environment by providing this educational series free of charge for both guests and the community to enjoy,” added Oesterling.

The program’s May lecture will focus on the majestic Humpback whale, which is a regular visitor to the Hawaiian Islands. Following the departure of these magnificent creatures, the Ke Kani O Ke Kai series will rotate to include other marine inhabitants and topics, including the Hawaiian monk seal, sea turtles, and dolphins, among others.

Reiri’s enthusiasm and expertise will have participants of all ages enthralled as she shares her vast knowledge and experience at sea with marine life. A native of Wisconsin, Reiri fostered a love of the outdoors at a young age. However, after seeing the ocean for the first time, she made the decision to dedicate herself to marine conservation and earned a degree in biology from the University of Wisconsin. Her passion has taken her to Costa Rica to study leatherback sea turtles and through Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand conducting research on Humpback whales and other marine mammals. Although Amy believes that research is the key to understanding the marine environment, she believes it is education that is vital to protecting our marine environment.

“We’re honored to have Amy leading the Ke Kani O Ke Kai series so that our guests can truly appreciate the natural wonders that surround them in the islands and learn how we all can protect them for future generations,” added Oesterling.
