Celebrating 75 Years Guiding Travelers
Europe is more popular than ever this summer. While jaunting to "the continent" is not exactly a cheap venture, this is a great year to grab a deal—and because of a stronger dollar and fluctuating conversion rates, some of Europe's top destinations are more affordable than ever, you just have to know where to go.
Fodor's Travel is releasing the list of 2011's hottest European destinations—where you can expect to nab the best value. If you want to get the best bang for your buck, Fodor's editor Cate Starmer is available to explain why you should consider:
• Berlin: Fifty years after construction began on the Berlin Wall, Berlin has morphed into one of Europe's most cultural cities, with classic and cutting-edge art scenes that rival those of London and New York. Yet it's done so while keeping prices in check.
• Budapest: Though Hungary's been part of the European Union since 2004, it has yet to adopt the Euro. That's a boon for would-be travelers, as the local currency took a hit in 2010, and these days, you can get 187 forint to the US dollar—a far better deal than converting to euros.
• Greece: With 2010's problems behind them, Greece proves once again to stand the test of time as a great value destination.
• Iceland: Iceland's debt crisis lowered tourism costs in popular Reykjavik only to have the 2010 volcano eruption further setback recovery. Getting here is cheaper, and faster, than essentially anywhere in Europe.
• Ireland: Yes, Ireland's still pricier than other European destinations on this list, but this traveler's favorite is nonetheless more affordable lately than it has been in years past with hotels rates dropping 10%.
• Poland: Kraków is still blissfully under the radar, keeping prices down and crowds at a minimum.
• Portugal: Appealing beaches, sun-drenched vineyards, cultural cities, and flavorful cuisine are all part of the country's agreeable mix—for much less money than neighboring Spain and a fraction of Italy.
Fodor's Travel is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year by giving away free plane tickets to Europe…anywhere in Europe! "There's so much to see—from the classic cities to beautiful countryside, from ancient monuments, cathedrals, and castles to modern hotels and restaurants, we're going to help travelers get to the best vacation for them" says Fodor's Editor Cate Starmer.
