Press Release: Steigenberger’s New Grandhotel Graces Leipzig’s Stage

The east German city of Leipzig has a new hotel star: The Steigenberger Grandhotel Leipzig located near the center of the old town close the Naschmarkt and the historic town hall. The elegant luxury hotel skilfully combines traditional and modern elements as the historic façade of the former merchant building was painstakingly preserved. It is an important addition to Steigenberger’s luxury hotel group.

The completely renovated property has over 163 luxury rooms, 14 suites, each measuring between 550 and 770 square feet, and one Presidential Suite. Conference guests will be well served by the conference area, which covers around 5,400 square feet and has four seminar rooms. In the future, guests will be able to relax in the hotel's own premium-category wellness and spa area and in the two restaurants - one of which reaches gourmet standard - and the Lobby bar. www.steigenberger.com

The new Steigenberger Grandhotel is the first Steigenberger luxury property in Leipzig and the city has long been high on the wish list for the company. Leipzig is an important business center in the state of Saxony and records consistent overnight accommodation figures and is a rewarding destination for business travellers and tourists alike. The city combines recent history as starting point of the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 with cultural significant as home to musical greats from Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann to Goethe. Leipzig has been beautifully restored and today shines with its historic sites from the St Thomas Church to the historic town hall, its impressive shopping arcades and courtyards, as well as its modern, cutting edge art scene. www.leipzig.de

Well-regarded as a city of music, Leipzig is and was home to many great composers from Bach, Mendelssohn and Schumann to Mahler and Wagner who lived and worked in the city. This year Leipzig honors its famous artists with annual festivals for Mendelssohn (September 2 - 24) and Bach (June 10 - 19), but also a special anniversary festival: Mahler’s 100th anniversary with all ten of his symphonic works (May 17 - 29).

Leipzig's international reputation is closely associated with the famous Gewandhaus Orchestra, which is based in the Gewandhaus concert hall on Augustusplatz. Its history began with the "Grosse Concert" ("Great Concert") of 1743. Every year, the orchestra performs in many locations in Germany and abroad. When in Leipzig, the orchestra often accompanies the St Thomas' Boys Choir in St Thomas' Church and performs in productions of the Leipzig Opera House. The St. Thomas’ Boys Choir itself is one of the best in the world and will celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2012 with concerts and events throughout the year. www.leipzig.de
