Resort Celebrates Role in Putting Out Islands of The Bahamas on Map
NASSAU, The Bahamas, January 7, 2008 – Fifty years ago the modern vacation was only beginning to take shape, the world was still pretty large and only the most intrepid travelers had heard of an island called Exuma in The Bahamas. In 1958 BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) launched the first trans-Atlantic jet service, Pan Am began daily flights between New York and Paris, and Lawrence Lewis, heir to the Flagler fortune, opened the Club Peace & Plenty resort on Great Exuma.
A week of festivities celebrating the opening of the resort – January 14, 1958 – begins on Jan. 12, 2008 with parties, dances, Junkanoo and visits from Bahamian officials extending their congratulations on the resort’s anniversary and accomplishments.
Early visitors to Club Peace & Plenty often arrived by water like Prince Philip of England who yachted down from Nassau. Exuma is a haven for boating and sailing and many modern seafarers are still attracted to the resort. Johnny Depp accepted his Golden Globe for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest from the bar at the Club.
The main building was originally a sponge warehouse that was converted in a 24 room, Colonial style resort that established a reputation as a first-class fishing lodge. Additions, renovations and updates have provided more rooms and amenities over time, but the Peace & Plenty remains true to the style envisioned by Mr. Lewis. The present day Club Peace & Plenty draws many families with its relaxed atmosphere and proximity to the stunning beaches of Stocking Island.
Today this “Queen of Out Island hotels” is owned by Stan Benjamin, a Cleveland industrialist who purchased the property in 1969 after falling in love with the island and its people during a vacation. Club Peace & Plenty has been recognized for its role in putting the Out Islands of The Bahamas on the map, and promoting tourism to the islands in general, by numerous organizations within the country.
