Camden International Film Festival Announces 2011 Full Feature Schedule

Festival Screening 2 World, 4 US, and 9 New England Premieres

CAMDEN, Maine (September 1, 2011) The Camden International Film Festival has announced its full slate of feature films for the 2011 program, taking place September 29th – October 2nd throughout Camden and Rockland, Maine.  

With themes ranging from war, economic decline, friendship, and hope, the 2011 Camden IFF will present nearly 60 films from all across the globe, including a number of US and regional premieres.  Now in its seventh year, the Camden International Film Festival presents a snapshot of the cultural landscape through the year’s best non-fiction storytelling, connecting filmmakers and industry representatives with audiences to discuss documentary film as an art form, a catalyst for change and as an outlet for the independent voice.

“This year’s program truly represents the exceptional craftsmanship in the independent documentary world today,” says Benjamin Fowlie, founder and director of the Camden International Film Festival.  “We’ve continued our tradition of highlighting work from emerging voices, programming them alongside established directors and pioneers in the form.   And most importantly, this year we’ve put a major emphasis on storytelling, both through film selections and panel and workshop design.  The quality and diversity of work in this year’s program is outstanding and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with our audiences."

Carrying on the tradition of discussion that characterizes the Camden IFF, nearly every film will be accompanied by a post-screening Q&A with directors or producers. The festival will also expand upon its POINTS NORTH Forum. POINTS NORTH, founded in 2009, is a two day conference that provides the New England filmmaking community an unparalleled opportunity to connect with industry leaders from HBO, A&E Indie Films, ITVS, PBS, the Tribeca Institute, and a number of other funders, broadcasters and independent executive producers.   In total, over sixty industry representatives and filmmakers will be in attendance over the course of the four-day festival.

AT NIGHT, THEY DANCE

AT NIGHT, THEY DANCE is one family’s story. The film takes us into the heart of a clan of women, in which the art of dancing has been passed down from mother to daughter since time immemorial. Filmed in Cairo, AT NIGHT, THEY DANCE takes an unsentimental yet lyrical look at a hidden world full of surprise and fascination.

AT THE EDGE OF RUSSIA

Michal Marczak | Poland/Russia | 2010

New England Premiere

Alexei is a nineteen year old recruit being flown in to perform his military service on the frontier of northern Russia. The base is one of few such remaining outposts on the Arctic Ocean. There are five other seasoned and long serving soldiers stationed here, each with their own personal story or secret that has caused them to retreat from the real world.

BETTER THIS WORLD

Two boyhood friends from Midland, Texas – David McKay and Bradley Crowder – fall under the sway of a charismatic revolutionary ten years their senior. A dramatic story of idealism, loyalty, crime and betrayal, BETTER THIS WORLD goes to the heart of the War on Terror and its impact on civil liberties and political dissent in post-9/11 America.

BLUE MERIDIAN

BLUE MERIDIAN is a journey following the Mississippi river from Cairo, Illinois to New Orleans, Louisiana. A documentary road movie through a mythic place and an encounter with people living between traces from natural disasters, economic decline and a turbulent American history.

BOMBAY BEACH

Alma Har’el | USA / Israel | 2011

New England Premiere

The rusting relic of a failed 1960s development boom, the Salton Sea is a barren Californian landscape often seen as a symbol of the failure of the American Dream. BOMBAY BEACH is a dreamlike poem that sets the personal stories of these distinctive yet familiar characters to a stylized amalgam of observational documentary and choreographed dance, with music by Beirut and Bob Dylan, all cast against the atmospheric scenery of the titular ghost town.
