Soak Up Kansas History in Southeast Kansas:  Located between the Flint Hills and the Ozarks, the rolling grasslands and wooded hills of Southeastern Kansas offer magnificent landscapes - and some of the richest frontier and Civil War history in the state. Experience dynamic museums, historic re-enactments and fascinating sites like the Fort Scott National Historic Site, the John Brown Museum in Osawatomie and the Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site in Pleasanton.  For more information on Southeast Kansas visit www.travelks.com/resources/PDF/588-587-Southeastern Wooded Hills.pdf. 

 

Fall Turkey Hunting – Time for the Big Birds:  Wild turkey populations have been growing for years in Kansas, offering hunters the opportunity to pursue them in the fall and spring. While the fall turkey season officially opened Oct. 1, it runs long enough to add this traditional game bird to Thanksgiving and Christmas tables.  Most of Kansas (with the exception of west central and southwestern Kansas) is open to fall hunting, and the seasons are long. This year, the seasons run Oct. 1-Nov. 29, Dec. 12-31, 2011 and Jan. 9-31, 2012. Hunters may use legal shotguns or archery equipment. Kansas Honors Veterans with Celebrations Across the State:  Veteran’s Day is a big deal in Kansas, and many local communities plan week-long activities to celebrate and honor the sacrifices made by our nation’s veterans.  In El Dorado, festivities begin on November 1 with a traditional concert of patriotic music and continue through November 11 with parades, free hot dog feeds, a WWII weapons demonstration and battle re-enactment, and a Salute to Veterans on Veterans Day.  For more details call, 316-321-3150.   In 1991, Emporia, KS became the first city in the United States to establish an All Veterans Memorial Park dedicated to veterans of all wars, conflicts and peace time service and has one of the state’s largest celebrations.  Emporia will once again host a community-wide All Veterans Tribute from November 5 – 14, 2011.  Activities and events include a Vietnam Era Roundtable; a Freedom Fest Run/Walk/Ride; a Veteran Artist Gallery Exhibit; and a Veteran’s Day breakfast, parade, memorial service and USO show on November 11.  For more details, visit www.emporiakschamber.org/custom2.asp?pageid=895.
