“Solar Christmas Tree”
Installation By Viessmann At The Opposite House
 
BEIJING (December 7, 2011) – The Opposite House in conjunction with Viessmann Heating Technology is pleased to present an innovative and sculptural Christmas tree created in the spirit of sustainability and the environment.
On display through January 9, 2012, the “solar tree” is constructed out of 105 reclaimed solar thermal vacuum tubes used to harness the energy of the sun. The Christmas tree is nearly 20 feet high and 13 feet wide at its base. A three-dimensional solar energy icon designed exclusively for Viessmann by German graphic artist, Karl Duschek, takes the place of the traditional star representing the potential of solar power. The tree is lit with energy efficient warm-white LED bulbs for a modern look.
Director of Marketing for Viessmann, Andreas Tank, remarks that “renewable energy sources play an important role in a sustainable global development, but during this festive season environmental consciousness seems to be set aside. The consideration of holiday consumption, energy-demanding decorations and the deforestation of trees worldwide gave inspiration to the idea of this tree.”
The Opposite House has other environmentally conscious touch-points like its paper-less check-in and check-out process, use of reclaimed wood along its corridors and natural light in the public spaces. This project “is more industrial than what we’ve done in the past. We wanted this year’s ‘non-tree’ tree to get visitors to reflect on their attitude towards sustainability during this holiday season; and working with Viessmann is a different approach to a shared value,” says General Manager, Anthony Ross.
