THE WORLD BEGINS 2008 EXPLORING THE SHORES OF AFRICA

09-29-2007

The World, the only private residence at sea, will begin 2008 along the western coast of Africa, following its New Year’s celebration in the Canary Islands.     A full month will be devoted to the region at The World’s signature leisurely pace, allowing Residents and Guests to truly experience each port and the surrounding area.   Beginning the month of January in Senegal and continuing south with stops in Sấo Tomé & Príncipe, Namibia and South Africa, The World’s African itinerary will provide gorgeous views through the vessel’s windows as well as unique and thrilling onshore excursions.

In Senegal, The World will dock in Dakar where Residents and Guests may choose to visit Dakar University, the impressive Old Railway Station, the Presidential Palace with its Royal Guard or the IAN Museum which boasts the largest collection of West African art.  Other onshore excursions in Senegal may include visits to a traditional African market and the striking Revelation Mosque near the Atlantic Ocean

Two ports of call in Sấo Tomé & Príncipe provide Residents and Guests with onshore options including The National Museum in Fort São Sebastião as well as the upscale resort, Equator’s Line, on the Islet of Ilhéu das Rolas.  The second port, Bom Bom, is an extinct volcanic island featuring a succession of beautiful valleys and steep mountains all covered with rich woods.  From Sấo Tomé & Príncipe The World sails to Namibia for visits to Walvis Bay and Lüderitz.  Highlights include the renowned seaside resort of Swakopmund and the Namibian desert, a great jumping off point for desert safaris and the chance to watch penguins and seals in the Benguela Current.

The World will spend over two weeks exploring South Africa, beginning with a stop at Cape Town for onshore excursions to the Malay Quarter, the popular shopping area of Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, the wine regions in Stellenbosch and Paarl and Robben Island, a one time leper colony, which later become a political prison.  The carefully calculated departure time allows for a scenic sail away view of Table Mountain at sunset.  The vessel will then visit Port Elizabeth to enjoy sandy beaches at Algoa Bay, the Addo Elephant Park and the Rovos Rail classic train journey between Pretoria and Cape Town.  The next South African port-of-call is Durban with such onshore offerings as the Phezulu traditional village and overland opportunities to Londolozi, Nyala, Hluhluwe and Shamwari. Game Reserves.  The final stop is Richard’s Bay, home to KwaZulu Natal National Parks and Reserves and the in-town Lake Mzingazi – home to crocodiles, hippos and water birds.

The final three African countries on The World’s 2008 Itinerary are Mauritius, Madagascar and the Seychelles Islands.  Highlights include Paradise Island, set in one of Mauritius' most exquisite lagoons, the extinct volcano of Trou aux Cerfs, Plaine Champagne Forest, Casela Bird Park, and the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens.  Residents and Guests may visit an area inhabited by daytime lemurs or choose to enjoy the great snorkeling and diving offerings of Madagascar. The World wraps up its African adventure with ten days in the Seychelles with easy on/off access in Victoria on the first and last day allowing for Residents and Guests to arrange for transportation to and from the vessel.
