New Orleans restaurateur Ralph Brennan, the Culinary Institute of America’s only Trustee from that great food town, has seen it all. During the Clinton administration, a team of Brennan’s chefs catered a lavish dinner for the Presidentat a private residence. Dishes included a taste from the Gulf Waters—“Humongous” Roasted U-10 Gulf Shrimp with White Truffle Oil—and flavors from the Bayou—Louisiana Alligator Sausage Wrapped in Puff Pastry with Creole Mustard. When presidential hopeful Senator John McCain was on the campaign trail, Mr. B’s [which Ralph Brennan owns in partnership with his sister, Cindy Brennan] served him a custom salad ofBeef and Gulf Shrimp Remoulade served over Bibb Lettuce, Spicy Boiled Eggs, and Crumbled Blue Cheese. Since that day, the “McCain Salad” has been the absolute must-have salad on the lunch menu.
Heading deep in to Clinton territory, Little Rock’s prized restaurant -- Ashley’s in the historic Capital Hotel -- has seen the former President gathering with friends and family for unprecedented meals. And to the surprise of some, but not to those who really know the elegant, poised, and ever-gracious former First Lady, Laura Bush was sighted taking a mid-day respite at the Capital Hotel.
Three blocks from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the most stellar of fine properties—The Jefferson—has had countless international political officials stop in to dine and others who stay for weeks on end. President George H. W. Bush made it his home dining room while preparing for the inauguration, and from time to time his informal headquarters. And most recently, as reported from the Associated Press,President Barack Obama joined 25 guests there for a private round table discussion.
Some presidents are modern modifiers when you least expect it. President Jimmy Carter hosted heads of state from Europe and Africa at The Doyle Collection’s ultra-contemporary The Dupont Circle Hoteland The Normandy in the vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood of DC. Hundreds of celebrities, dignitaries, and heads of state relish the fact that they can meet in these luxe establishments that are away from the clamor of downtown DC. Indeed, it was this same spot where former White House Executive Chef, Walter Scheib, hosted an insider’s tasting of White House favorite dishes he created exclusively for former Presidents Clinton and Bush during his term in the kitchen.
President Obama has always had a “passion” for the Passion Food Hospitality restaurants, dating from his time as a Senator and on the campaign trail. The late lamented TenPenh was a favorite, where food similar to that of his native Hawaii brought him memories of home. And we see that First LadyMichelle Obama enjoys a Southern twist, because she and her closest pals have been seen scooting intoAcadiana. Sister restaurant DCCoast has also ranked high with a presidential hopeful -- enjoying the dedicated presence of Newt and Callista Gingrich over the years.
