DC Celebrates the 2012 Centennial Cherry Blossom Festival

In 1912, an incredible gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees was bestowed on Washington, DC by Tokyo, Japan. Rooted strongly and surviving outside elements, the trees have withstood the test of time – and nearly a century later, the District is preparing for an epic Cherry Blossom celebration unlike any other.  With the official Cherry Blossom Festival running from March 20 – April 27, 2012, the city’s restaurants and hotels are abuzz with creative dishes and offerings that will delight locals and visitors alike.

The Passion Food Hospitality group, Cherry Blossom enthusiasts for the past fifteen years, will be offering “Cherry Blossom Combos,” the season’s perfect sip and bite. The cocktail and small plate pairings will be offered at AcadianaCeibaDC Coast, and District Commons.  Look forward to creative couplings such as Ceiba’s Cherry Aperitivo of Cold Smoked Duck Breast and Squash Blossom Empanada served with Pickled Cherry Salsa paired with the delectable “Fleure de la Cereza” cocktail of El Dorado Rum, Sainte Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Fresh Cherry Juice and Rosé Gruet Sparkling Wine.

Dressed all in pink, The Jefferson, Washington, DC will be hard to miss as the historic gem lights up in pink blush tones to commemorate the 100th anniversary. Plume’s executive chef Chris Jakubiec has prepared a 100-year retrospective menu with a nod to Japan, including dishes like White Miso-Glazed Black Cod with Green Bamboo-Infused Sushi Rice and Sweet Potato Pommes Dauphine. For wine connoisseurs, the eight-course dinner will end with the incredibly rare 1912 Madiera, the same vintage as our centenarian cherry trees. Steps down the hall at The Jefferson’s handsome bar, Quill, you can sip on the Hanami Centennial cocktail with Mantensei Sake, Gvine Floraison, Meyer Lemon, Cherry Heering, and Housemade Ginger and Lemongrass Syrup.

For those looking for more relaxation, the Jefferson also offers a Japan Ritual Spa Treatment, a deeply relaxing treatment with spring blossoms at the centerpiece. This 90-minute Wild Cherry Blossom Poultice Masage provides balance and restores energy, after a long day of sightseeing.

A frisky rose style sparks The Doyle Collection’s Normandy Hotel and Dupont Circle Hotel to offer 20 percent off rooms for the festivities. The city will be in bloom, as will the properties, aglow in pink lighting and adorned with blossoms. Guests arriving at The Normandy Hotel will be greeted with cherry blossom inspired amenities of Petite Blush Pink Champagne and Cherry Chocolate Treats.  At Café Dupont, the three-course Cherry Blossom menu is not to be missed, as Chef Silvan Kramer delights the senses with dishes incorporating Cherry Blossom Black Pepper Essence, Cherry Gastric, and Cherry Blossom Jelly. Bar Dupont puts the cherry on top with a Cherry Mojitoor a Berry Blossom cocktail.
