Two Civil War programs will explore events that unfolded 150 years ago during the Maryland Campaign
Frederick, MD –On August 4, 2012, the Frederick Visitor Center will host special “Civil War Saturday” events at the Frederick Visitor Center, featuring two special educational programs commemorating the 150thAnniversary of the Civil War in Maryland. At 11:00 a.m., noted Civil War historian and author, Dennis E. Frye, will give a brief lecture and book signing related to his new release, September Suspense: Lincoln’s Union in Peril. At 1:00 p.m., Monocacy National Battlefield will hold a panel discussion on the significance of the discovery of Special Orders #191. Both programs are free and open to the public on a first-come-first-serve basis as space allows.
Frederick County is renowned for its rich Civil War history and 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of Gen. Robert E. Lee's 1862 Maryland Campaign. The commemoration explores the impact of Lee's first advance of the Confederate army into the north, beginning with crossing the Potomac River into Maryland, the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam, and concluding with Abraham Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation.
Throughout this period, a number of partners are joining together to commemorate these important historical events. Reenactments, living history demonstrations, lectures, concerts, special exhibits, commemorative church services and more will take place from August through October 2012, with key battle anniversaries falling in September.

Noted historian and author Dennis E. Frye, Chief Historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, will give brief remarks on his new book, September Suspense: Lincoln’s Union in Peril, followed by a book signing. In 1862, the United States had been ripped apart by a civil war entering its 18th month. In his book, Dennis Frye draws from a voluminous cache of period newspapers to expertly demonstrate just how fragile the national bond had become by the autumn of 1862. Writer, lecturer, guide and preservationist, Dennis E. Frye is the Chief Historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and a prominent Civil War historian. This event is free and open to the public.
